UPDATE 2/25/18:

This paragraph was written today by dog therapist Lish (one of Henry’s best friends):  “Henry is the perfect dog!!! Jodie and I took Henry to the Rockfish Trail today for a hike. We met at the shelter at 9am and Henry was very excited to get started.  Jodie had her car all set up for him.  I had to lift him into the car.  Not because he was afraid, but he really just didn’t know what to do.  He sat right down and looked out the window.  He was not scared at all.  When we arrived at the trailhead, he was ready to go.  Not timid or afraid.  He walked nicely on the leash, did not pull and kept up a good pace - tail up, inquisitive and happy. We circled back to the car and he let us know that he wanted to put in some more miles.  We walked over to the other side of the trail which meant that we had to go under the overpass.  He never slowed down even with cars on the road above.  We walked awhile and then sat at a picnic table to love on him. We continued on to the car.  I lifted him in again and we went for a longer drive which he loved.  He eventually laid down and enjoyed himself.  He was so good that we went through the McDonalds drive through and Jodie bought him a plain hamburger to enjoy in his room.  When we arrived back at the shelter, we peeked in and he had eaten his burger and was sound asleep.  He was the perfect dog.  He was agreeable to unfamiliar situations, walked nicely on the leash, and loved riding in the car. Henry would be the perfect hiking buddy once he earns your trust.  I believe I speak for both Jodie and I that we were honored to be with him today. We love him.  We plan to take him again as well as give other AH dogs this opportunity.  It was such fun!”  And Jodie concurred 100%!

HENRY’S BACKGROUND:  On 11/20/16 Henry was found at the side of a road, emaciated and sick with Lyme, Ehrlichia, hookworms, and whip worms.  His ribs and belly were hairless; he was days away from freezing to death or dying of starvation and disease!  We vetted him, cured his illnesses, and then he was neutered.  A gentle soul, he was very tolerant of all of the prodding he received.

Henry is now a handsome, healthy, tri-color Hound who weighs 54 pounds and seems to be about 4 years old.  A very sweet but shy dog, he loves being around other dogs and wants to get to know them all.  With other dogs, he enters his comfort level and becomes very playful.  He kisses other dogs through the fence and prances and play bows to invite them all to join in play with him.  Even when he was so sick and skinny, there was “a playful little dog” inside him.

He is very clean in his room (read that as easy to house train) and good on a leash.  Henry has had several roommates, but one by one they have all gotten adopted.  He is still shy and careful around new people, but he is never vicious.  He is a sweet, gentle dog that now kisses some of us he has grown to trust.  Sometimes he even puts his paw on us asking for “more affection, please.”  Staff members, dog walkers, and our “dog therapy group” have been working with Henry for a year now and we all KNOW he has all the makings of being someone’s very beloved pet.

Henry will do best in a calm adult home in a quiet community (not a city) with a securely fenced yard and people who will give him the time necessary to grow to trust them.  He needs another mellow doggie playmate to help him with his self-confidence too.  To learn more about Henry, contact the shelter at 434-263-7722 or Flower at 434-361-0190 or .
