UPDATE 6/17/2020:

Precious Willard arrived on 4/18/19 as an unclaimed stray from Animal Control.  He is a Hound who is about 3 years old and weighs 42 pounds. (His estimated Birthday is 4/16/17.)  Willard has been with us for over a year now and he has become a favorite of shelter staff.  Even though we love him, he really NEEDS a loving, forever home now.

Willard is a goofy, sometimes aloof guy that loves two things:  FOOD and RUNNING AROUND in the big yard with someone!  He loves hanging out with Ed and is very polite during his training sessions.  He never jumps up on Ed.  We have repeatedly tried to teach him to SIT, but he DOWNs instead—and right away because he knows a treat will be his reward.  He sometimes accepts treats with a gentle mouth, but we are training him to WAIT (until he calms down) and then accept the treat softly.  WAITING isn’t real easy for him.  (The poor guy had been starving for quite a while before our shelter took him in, so he is food obsessed.)

Willard is learning that being touched and loved on is a very nice thing, and he now comes to us for affection.  He enjoys neck and ear massages and butt rubs.  He happily slides down the hillside, wiggling on his back, but he hasn’t yet bellied up long enough for us to rub his belly.  He WILL LOVE belly rubs once he knows what they feel like.

Willard is a diamond in the rough.  He is smart, food motivated, and ready to learn new things, even though patience when it comes to food isn’t his biggest virtue.  Hanging around with someone who pays attention to him, relaxes him and makes him feel special.  He is a very attentive “school boy” for a teacher who “treats” him well.  (After Willard has enjoyed some run time in the yard, he is able to relax more easily in his room too.)

He is now rather clean in his room and probably would be IF he could get outside each time he needs to relieve himself.  This being the case, we feel he would do well in a home with a doggy door, so he can take himself out when he needs to potty.

He doesn’t fire up at other dogs but he may do best as an only pet because sharing any type of food with another animal is something he probably would not be good at.

Astrid wrote on 6/I4/2020:  I got a nice video of Willard walking calmly with Maura.  He really relaxes away from the shelter. Someday, the right home will discover this sweetheart and they will be happy they did.
