UPDATE 7/28/2020:

Kilburn, an Australian Shepherd (mix), and Jasmine (a Beagle) came to us on 7/5/19, after their owner (a generous supporter of Almost Home) passed away.  Both dogs were terribly overweight.  Little Jasmine was quickly adopted but Kilburn didn’t share her same luck.  When Kilburn arrived, he was 5½ years old, weighed 106 pounds, and seemed depressed from all the drastic life changes in his life.  But once he got to know us and learn we were friends, he begged for belly rubs and gave us his trademark, full-face Kilburn smile.  He is now 6½ years old and weighs a healthy 57 pounds—he has lost half his body weight. (Kilburn’s birthday is 11/8/13.  He looked like a little bear when he was born.)

He seemed on his way to find happiness, when suddenly his rear legs gave out. We were afraid for him.  The diagnosis was that he'd  had a bout of  FCE  ( ).  Luckily, he recovered as if nothing ever happened, and Veterinarians say it is rarely recurrent.  This is great news and his legs have been working great since that event.

The much thinner Kilburn is quite perky and his handsome face and happy brown eyes hide the loss he endured a year ago.  He is more than ready for a home of his own now.  Who can resist that waggling bob-tail that makes him look as if a black and tan teddy-bear came alive?  Sometimes, he will even stretch a paw out to get you to notice him.  He loves to be brushed too.

Kilburn has tried new homes twice but was returned because he tried to protect things he was afraid would be taken away.  He let folks know he thought food was too yummy to share. He also tried to explain that he was picky about dogs he might need to live with.  He might prefer to just live with his people and be the most important to them.

This poor dog has suffered so much loss in such a short time, he needs someone to let him know that he doesn’t need to lose anything more.  He loves a belly rub or a good scratch of the butt and may back right up into your hand to get one.  He also loves to chase and retrieve squeak toys.   He enjoys easy leash walks and is a good listener if you want to sit and talk.  Kilburn keeps his room clean (an indication he is housed trained and/or would be easy to be) and like us can't resist a good nap in his own comfy bed.

While he is in his dream world, we imagine he sees himself in a calm household with people who are understanding and want to share their hearts with his.  He would do best in a home without children and/or children that visit.
