UPDATE 9/17/20:

Hootie, a red and white hound mix, found himself confused and lost in the road. When, bam, he was hit by a car.  At only 10 months old and a scant 45 pounds that hit took a serious toll on his body. When our shelter took custody, he had a badly broken front leg and a severely damaged rear leg.  Weeks later, his front leg is still splinted, but now almost healed. The vet had tried to save his back leg by pinning it, but the bone was too fragile, so it was amputated. Thankfully, he did not have internal injuries!

Hootie (the happy name we gave him) recuperated at the vet for a few weeks, and they helped him learn to walk again.  His medical bills have been expensive, so he is listed on our Help To Heal Fund page.  Any donations you give to support him will be extremely appreciated. https://www.nelsonspca.org/info/display?PageID=13802

Hootie has moved into our shelter, where he quickly impressed us with his optimistic, can-do attitude.  This boy is not about to let anything keep him down. He has been through a lot of scary and painful things during the last month and a half, and yet has remained 150% sweet!  He wags his tail constantly, loves other dogs, and lives to have moments of any attention from whoever will give him a spec of time.

Hootie doesn’t believe he is handicapped and has already learned to navigate with his splinted front leg and amputated rear leg. His spirit is undaunted, and he lights up the minute anyone steps into his view.  You can tell that he wishes he could play without the hindrance of his healing injuries, but patiently he perseveres. When he is alone and hears people moving around, he sends chirpy barks, hopeful they will call someone to visit him. He greets the entire world with a full-butt-wagging tail.”

Hootie needs an empathetic family who will help him live his life to the fullest.  He would probably enjoy another dog family member too. He will be available to adopt as soon as his splint is removed and the Vet gives him an okay (about a week from now). We are currently accepting applications for him at https://www.nelsonspca.org/info/adoption
