Luke is really starting to come into his own.  He tolerates my husband and likes me (lol).  But he makes it known who his favorite person is - Madalyn.  He loves to give her snuggles and kisses.  He is spending more time outside, jogging and running more, going on walks, and gets so excited when she comes home, he jumps up on her.  He is super sweet and we are so blessed to have found him.

In the beginning, his eating was small - which was understandable as he was getting adjusted.  He is now in full on eating mode.  He drinks more and Maddie says his urine has gotten significantly lighter in color.  When she is at school, if he is not sleeping on his love seat, he goes  upstairs and lays on her bed until he hears her come in all call for him. Yep - he has decided he is going up and down our stairs!!

He also enjoys short car rides and prefers to sit shot gun.  When Madalyn goes into town to stay with her sister, Luke goes along for the visit and  stays there too.  They take him to our family land and walk the trails with him.  He is always telling her "I'm not ready to go home yet"....  lol  I'm so glad the weather has been nice giving him the opportunity to  enjoy the outside more and more.  He goes out when ready, walks the yard,  takes in the smells, and when he is ready, he comes to the door.   Sometimes we sit on the covered porch when he's out, other times we huddle around the kitchen window to watch him to see what he is doing.

I truly believe the love and care you gave him during your fostering helped to open him up to the great, loving dog he is today. Thank you. Michelle

Luke enjoyed a walk this afternoon with my daughter. She said when she was ready to come back home, Luke wanted to keep going. He enjoyed exercising on this beautiful day!

UPDATE:  JAN 1, 2016

Luke, an 80 pound, 7 year old English Pointer/Setter (mix) has been in a loving foster home (with other dogs & cats) since March 2013 when he was a stray, so emaciated he tried to eat the blanket Animal Control put on his bed.  He had an injured front foot that had apparently been caught in a trap and he had a bad hip that needed surgery to fix.

All recovered now from his surgery and with some meat on his bones, Luke:

- is an incredibly sweet, tall, handsome, southern GENTLEMAN with very nice manners.

- LIKES OTHER DOGS—all shapes and sizes—and he LIKES CATS too.

- he peacefully free ranges inside the home with the many dogs and cats too.

- is house trained & respectful of things in the home; does not chew on inappropriate items.

- walks well on a leash.

- LOVES relaxing on his LOVE SEAT & sleeping on his 6” foam bed with his head on a pillow.

- is VERY appreciative of the loving attention he gets every day.

- stays around the farm off leash—no fence—at his foster home BUT we don’t want him to be off leash in his new home UNLESS he is inside a fenced yard.

- no longer limps when he walks and he is healthy and up to date with his shots.

- only barks when he is concerned about or afraid of something, or someone is at the door.

- can be extra cautious around some men (for reasons we don’t understand).

- is nervous about riding in a vehicle; wants to be a HOMEBODY.

- was very damaged and sad when he arrived at Hazels but he is VERY HAPPY and healthy now.

Luke is a big, gentle soul with a lot of love to give.  He would do best in a calm home, with other animals, and nice soft beds.  After what he’s endured, he will be FOREVER GRATEFUL to you for ADOPTING HIM & making him YOUR VALUED family member.

(To learn more about him, contact his foster mom Hazel at 434-263-4225 or Flower at 434-361-0190 )
