UPDATE FROM ADOPTERS:  4/18/18  -- VIDEO

UPDATE 3/26/16:

Please read this. Even if you don’t adopt him, Doggie is a fellow you need to read about. His body is scarred but his beautiful heart isn’t, and he’s lived in our shelter for 1½ years! No one has “picked him” to be their dog yet, but someday they will. Until then, we will enjoy loving him because that is an easy thing to do; he is a nice, unassuming dog who simply appreciates being paid attention to. He loves it when I brush him and caress his cheeks, ears, and butt. When I gently run my fingers down the long scar on his back and tell him how nicely it has healed and how handsome he is, I can almost hear him purr. When we are walking around in the big yard together, he sometimes he gets so happy that he’ll run in little circles around me, and then flip over on his back and “wiggle” in circles around me—chest up in appreciation. He loves to feel special and I love to make him feel special!

Doggie Howzer is a neutered, male, tri-color Treeing Walker Coonhound, about 5 years old and 50 pounds. He is a gentleman of a dog who often stands quietly and surveys his surroundings while other dogs bark and carry on at the shelter. He is affectionate (though sometimes a little shy at first), he accepts treats with a very gentle mouth, and he seems to fancy female dogs his size. He is VERY TREAT motivated! He needs someone who will use treats as they work with him on a consistent basis to teach him lots of new things. He knows: sit, wait, catch, and we are working on other words too. He sometimes picks up a ball and carries it around too.

DOGGIE’S STORY: Animal control picked him up as an injured stray on 7/15/14. He had a deep cut (or tear) down his backbone from his neck to his tail base. We don’t know what happened to him but the wound looked very painful. Doggie is a stoic dog and was very nice as he endured all of the healing treatments our vets and staff gave him over a two month period. Not once did he growl or try to harm anyone. THAT says a lot about him! He is a benevolent soul and doesn’t want trouble.

Doggie is a good age and a nice size. He hates being outside in cold weather and he is first to tell shelter staff that he is ready to come back inside, once he’s finished “his outside business.” (He will “speak” when he has something to say but he doesn’t normally bark much!) He loves to be outside in nice weather though, and he’d love to be someone’s beloved family member and share cozy times lounging with them. He is clean in his room which tells us he’d be easy to “house train” if you got him outside often enough to be. Like many dogs, he will pull on a leash when he sees a squirrel. He would probably do best with a big fenced yard and maybe even a mellow dog sister his own size to hang around with. He is GOOD with KIDS over 6 and RESPECTFUL of the CATS in our shelter too.

“House Hounds” make GREAT PETS because they really appreciate lounging around with their people and they wear easy maintenance coats! Doggie may have tattered ears and a scar down his back but we see him as “debonair.” He will be forever grateful to whoever sees beyond his scars, adopts him, and commits to loving him forever. PLEASE take ONE MORE look into Doggie’s sweet brown eyes and know that you could fix that little tinge of sadness you see there. He’d LOVE to have a FOREVER FAMILY who would make him feel AS SPECIAL AS HE IS and I’m pretty certain he would flip over on his back and “wiggle” in circles of happiness around you too…once he got to know you!

Please contact us, Flower & Ed at ek.gk@verizon.net or 434-361-0190 to learn more Doggie because WE are his BEST FRIENDS and we can tell you so much about him.

GOOD with MELLOW DOGS. GOOD with KIDS. RESPECTFUL of CATS.
