Fostering InformationFostering an animal isn't a lifetime commitment. It's a commitment to saving a LIFE. Through foster care, we can save hundreds of animals each year, but much work remains to find safe and forever homes for all of the animals entrusted into our care. Maybe you're not ready to make a long-term commitment to add an animal to your family. Why not consider fostering an animal for the Humane Society/SPCA of Nelson County (Almost Home Pet Adoption Center)? It is said that the worth of a society can be measured by the manner in which it treats its weakest member. Show our animals how much you care. If you are interested in fostering, please call Almost Home at 434 263-7722 or email pets@nelsonspca.org We don't keep puppies at Almost Home but instead prefer to place them in foster homes until they are ready to be transferred to other no-kill shelters in MA, NJ and Northern VA. We need foster homes to socialize cats, puppies and kittens. We need them for kittens and cats that are required to be in foster care before being transported to MA.
You can choose to foster a puppy, a litter of puppies, a cat, a kitten, or a litter of kittens. The HS/SPCA will provide spaying/neutering, vaccinations, worming and food for the animals while in foster care. All that we ask is that you provide tender, loving care in a safe and comfortable environment. Foster care is typically for short periods. It could be a few days, or, in some cases, a month or more. The need for foster care can be broken down into the following situations:
